Olecranon Bursitis Brief Review:

  • A common cause of painless elbow swelling
  • Commonly described as “a golf ball” or “goose egg”
  • Diagnostic studies are generally not necessary to make a diagnosis of
  • Olecranon bursitis.

Treatment:

  • Compression, ice, and avoidance of impact at the olecranon
  • NSAIDs
  • Aspiration of the bursa
  • Corticosteroid injection
    • Corticosteroids should never be injected if infection is a possibility.
  • Infected bursitis:
    • Oral antibiotics
    • Local incision and drainage
